Samrat Sil, a student from Presidency University in Kolkata, India is currently studying on the Master’s programme in Applied and Interdisciplinary History at HSE St. Petersburg. The programme focuses on the analytical part of history and how it can be used and applied in our day to day life. It comprises a wide variety of crucial topics like memory, identity narratives and the use of sources in history and historiography. It also focuses on heritage and its relation to history and economy. The students are encouraged to develop their own research topics for their Master’s thesis.

Ian Lowrie, visiting PhD-student from Rice University spent last academic year at HSE doing anthropology of Russian Science & Technology.

Lukas Geyer, a free-mover student from the University of Bayreuth in Germany, is currently studying in the Bachelor’s programme in Economics at HSE St. Petersburg. Lukas recently spoke to the HSE news service about his studies and connections to Russian culture.


For the first time the University is listed among the top Arts & Humanities institutions, taking 289th place globally and 3rd place within Russia. HSE was also ranked 2nd place within Russia in the sectoral ranking Social Sciences & Management, rising from 232nd place globally in 2014 to 161st place globally this year.
Admissions in 2015 was quite successful for the Higher School of Economics – perhaps the most successful in the history of the university – according to a statement made by HSE First Vice-Rector Vadim Radaev on August 31 at a press conference on student admissions at Moscow universities.
